The Department of Philosophy was founded in 1969. It covers a wide range of fields in the history of philosophy and offers programmes in undergraduate and graduate levels. There are elective courses for students from other departments, especially for students from the Department of Sociology and of Psychology who want to pursue a career as a high-school teacher. The language of education is Turkish. The department has Erasmus and Farabi agreements with several universities. In addition, the department offers minor degree programs in various fields provided that the student meets the criteria.
Since 2007, the Department of Philosophy organizes symposiums concerning distinguished philosophers every semester, and it has Bilge Karasu Library with approximately 4000 books on literature and philosophy.
