As the third philosophy department of Turkey, the department has been founded in The Department of Social and Administrative Sciences, in 1969 with the support of Rector Dr. Prof. İhsan Doğramacı and the Dean Prof. Dr. Osman Okyar, as a department that provides service courses to other departments of the university. Dr. Ioanna Kuçuradi was the first chair of the department and had been until 2003. Prof. Dr. Harun Tepe (2003-2006), Prof. Dr. Kurtuluş Dinçer (2006-2012) and Prof. Dr. Cemal Güzel (2012-2019) had been chair in turn. Prof. Dr. Kurtulus Dinçer has been the chair since 2019.
